palm_eosWell before the launch of the Palm Pre, we already knew what would supposedly be the 2nd Palm WebOS Phone. It was a device that looked somewhat like the Palm Treo Pro, codenamed Pixie and supposedly market-bound as the Palm Eos. It seems the Palm Eos may never actually reach the market – the company is first evaluating the successes and/or failures with the Palm Pre.

TechCrunch cites one of their sources in Asia:

“Palm has decided to put the Pixie on hold until they have better visibility into how its current models are selling in the market.”

Development is still active but a launch decision is far from being made. Probably a wise move. You’ll remember that people expected a flurry of Android phones after the initial launch of the T-Mobile G1 but it took at least 6 months in most parts of the world to get the HTC Magic and folks in the states are STILL waiting. Why? It is better to do it right than do it rushed.

Taking their time allows Palm two very important things:

  1. Time to improve WebOS, releasing OTA updates that build on the capabilities of the Palm Pre without having to account for various device specs, screen sizes, carriers, etc…
  2. Time to evaluate the Palm Pre hardware. What did consumers like? Was the keyboard too small? Did the screen scratch too much? Was their too much of a plastic feel? Was it too complex for manufacturers to make in large quantities and quickly? Palm can sort through this stuff to make changes to whatever product ideas they are currently considering.

Yes… I want to see many more Palm WebOS phones sooner rather than later. But patience will likely be rewarded – I would rather have Palm launch an extremely solid new WebOS handset for the holidays rather than launch a second phone that has more flaws than the original Palm Pre.
