Default Palm Pre Tethering?

Initially Sprint put something up saying they would allow tethering. Then they took it down. Since then, nothing has been said, confirmed or denied. Here is the original article showing they were allowing it:
Palm Pre Tethering Allowed By Sprint | Palm WebOS

So... anybody know for sure whether or not you can tether with the Palm Pre?

Default Palm Tethering...

I think they should include it. Lets say you have an unlimited plan and you decide to use it with your laptop, what is the difference if you are using data on your phone or data through tethering...Data is Data Right?!?

best buy has just come out with something called best buy mobile hot spot. for 59.99(one time fee) you can get something on your phone that will provide wireless tethering from your phone to any other wifi device aslong as you have an unlimited data plan. so regardless if sprint allows tethering you will be able to do it on the pre.

Basically, tethering in this context means using your phone to connect to the internet from your computer.
If you already pay for internet (data) to your carrier then you get to use internet on your laptop as no extra charge.

I used pdanet on my Moto Q (windows mobile 5 os) to connect to the internet using a usb cable connected between my phone and my laptop.

Yea same here..but if this phone can do all it says it can then why would you need tethering?

Some times you might need bigger screen realstate.
Well I dont have to pay a dime to use internet on my laptop anywere I go.
Newer phone can even do it wirelessly (HTC touch pro for example). If its free, why the heck not :P

I let movie buffer for a while, and watch movies on my 15" laptop when I am in a place without regular internet access.

I would use tethering if it was included (read:Sprint wont hammer you if they find out you're doing it) and if it was easy to use (read:connect through bluetooth or wifi, no cables or 3rd party programs). Even if the pre lives up to it's billing, an advantage for tethering could be as others have stated (more screen real estate) but for me would be having to type out a longer email.

The Palm website (not Sprint's website) says

Could you shed light onto this? AFAIK Sprint and other major carriers can tell when the phone is tethered or not, and even if you have unlimited data that does not mean tethering is allowed. Sounds like a scam from bestbuy to me

I don't think they will allow tethering, sprint will want to sell you their $60 mobile broadband plan to get the most money from you.

Right now, they are not in a good position to take such a hard line stance. Rather, I think tethering will be allowed, but not promoted by Sprint so as not to stop anyone from paying for the service if they so choose.

If anyone know's [or discovers] how to tether the Pre... please let me [us] know... thanks!

Hopefully PdaNet will quickly release a version for the Pre. I know it may take some time, but who knows what will happen.

Absolutely, there are ample gudes to unkosher "tethering" of Palm phones online. No matter how much protection the new OS has built in, determined users will discover a way to use the Pre as a modem within a few weeks or months, tops. I would love for Sprint to step up and do some type of one-time fee, rather than ridiculous $60/month phone-as-modem plan, for users to avoid a 3rd party app or USB wiring and coding/setting manipulation.

The logicomm guy who claimed he was testing a beta pre (twitter fiasco from last week) claimed that he was able to tether with it.

Tethering included in the plan would be nice but I would not bet on it. Lots of folks, including me, currently have a separate Sprint plan and a wireless card to get mobile service on their laptops. If they let you tether to the Pre for free then they will lose the revenue associated with those existing plans.

I hope I'm wrong and they offer it, would save me a fair amount of $$.

You're right of course, but who says carriers or any large companies for that matter, are fair? Especially when they have a highly desireable product.

Something weird is going on with tethering!
Me and my girlfriend have the exact same plane with Sprint.
But I have Moto Q and she has LG Rumor.
On my computer, i was messing around with Bluetooth Tetherring..following the exact same procedure.

Bluetooth Tethering is super simple with my Moto Q
But with Lg Rumor, on the Phone I get an error message (wrong sprint pcs username and password)

No where in the Moto Q setup do I have to enter username/password.

I am guessing it is the phone, even though i have enabled Bluetooth Dun on the LG Phone, and Windows vista discovered both the phone without a hitch.

Try the Lg on another computer and see if it works.

I think I will just wait for a PDAnet release. Hopefully this wont be a paid release. I won't jump for something that isn't free.
